  1. Voice memo isn't working. I can't hear anything when I review it. How do I turn up the volume on the voice memo?
First remember when you record, that the microphone is on the left bottom of the iPhone (when looking at the screen). When listening to a Voice Memo and you can't hear anything, the playback volume may be set too low. You can change the volume using the standard volume controls on the left side of your iPhone while the recording is being played back (note that the Play button must be flashing).

  2. What is that flashing circle at the bottom of the "Add" screen?
Like other GPS iPhone applications, Noteworthy Places uses the iPhone's GPS capabilities to determine your location. Because it can take some time for the iPhone to determine the location, the circle provides you with feedback on this process as it changes from red, to yellow and to green. When the circle is green, the accuracy is probably as good as it is going to get. It is possible that a better reading may come in after the circle turns green.

However, you can choose to save the location whenever you wish. So, if you're in a hurry and save, the accuracy may not be as good as if you had waited longer to save.

  3. Is my information stored on your server?
No, the information you enter into Noteworthy Places is your private information. It is stored only on the iPhone and in backups made when you sync with iTunes.

  4. If it asks to "use my location" does it mean it is tracking me?
This gives the iPhone permission to use the GPS feature to find where you are currently located. We use this to locate where you are for both adding new locations and determining how far you are from your saved locations when you sort by distance. No one is tracking you. The location is not shared with anyone, unless you email a saved location.

  5. Do I have to fill in all the fields?
No, you can save any location by filling in as many or as few (even none) fields as you wish. Additionally, you can go back and fill any fields at a later time by choosing a location and clicking on Edit in the "Detail" screen.

  6. Sometimes the address doesn't fill in. When I'm inside a building, the location accuracy never gets better than 260ft. Is the application broken? What is the best accuracy you can get?
Noteworthy Places relies upon the iPhone's GPS capabilities. It tries to first triangulate the location using cell towers and known WIFI hotspots. If there is a signal received from GPS satellites, then this triangulation is more accurate.

However, all of these methods are very dependent on where you are physically located. If you're in a high rise building, constructed of steel and concrete, the odds of finding a satellite signal are low, so thus the accuracy will be a higher number (the number indicates you could be anywhere within a circle of that radius). If you are in an unobstructed area with a clear view of the sky above, the iPhone should find numerous satellites and provide very good accuracy.

Noteworthy Places uses the GPS coordinates returned from the iPhone, and makes an address request to Google. Sometimes there is no matching address. Also, if the Google server is undergoing maintenance it may not be available, and we give you a warning message (see #7).

  7. I've gotten an error message regarding Google and the application doesn't return the address?
Noteworthy Places uses a location service (Google), which provides a physical address for the GPS coordinates returned by the iPhone. There are occasions when this service may be down or inaccessible. If this happens, you will receive an error messages depending the particular screen you are viewing. If you are in the "Add" screen or "Edit" screen you will receive " The Google Address Server is not responding. I'll keep on trying Or You Can Enter the Address". You can then wait and see if you do get an address, or just type it in if you know it. If you are in the Map view you will see: "The Google Address Server is not responding. I Can't Display the Location Marker". There will be no location marker until the location service is available.

  8. When I sort by ratings, how can I tell what they're rated?
The rating is given at the end of the address line like [5].

  9. How many locations can I store?
There is no preset limit. It will depend on how much physical memory is available on your iPhone.

  10. In the "Add' screen under "Photo", there is an icon which looks like a file folder to the right of the camera icon, what is that for?
What you're seeing is an icon representing the Camera Roll on the iPhone (those are photos in that icon!). A photo can be added directly from the camera or you can choose to add a previously taken photo from the Camera Roll.

  11. How do I get out of the "category" screen without selecting a category?
When you are on the "Add" or "Edit Details" screen you can select "Uncategorized" if you don't want a category. When selecting a category to search on in the "Locations" screen, you can select "all categories" if you don't want a specific one.

  12. When I take a picture from across the street, it gets the wrong address. What is the best way to do this right?
When you are in the "Add" location screen and take a picture from across the street, the address found is the one where you are located (which is across the street). One way around this situation is to first take the picture from across the street, then walk to the location that is of interest, enter any additional fields, and then save.

  13. What is the phone field for? Is that for my number?
The phone field is optional and can be used to enter the phone number of a location for which having a phone number might be useful; like a restaurant or store.

  14. Does the "search" field on the "Locations" screen search only the location name field?
No, Noteworthy Places does a full text search; it searches all of text that has been saved for any location (name, comments, address, etc). Your search terms can be located anywhere in any field.
